Vauxhall retail sales double year-on-year in November

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Bruce Wilder

Vauxhall posted retail sales of 6,643 vehicles in November 2009, a year-on-year increase of 128 per cent from November 2008, when Vauxhall sold 2,915 retail models.

The latest retail sales figures also show that Vauxhall has out-performed the same period in 2007, when 5,901 new Vauxhall cars hit the UK roads.

Vauxhall’s success wasn’t just limited to passenger vehicles however, with 590 Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles registered, almost 50 per cent up on the same time last year when 316 new Vauxhall Vans found a new home.

“This is excellent news for Vauxhall and its dealers,” Commented Rory Harvey, Vauxhall’s Retail Sales Director.

“Even taking into account the effects of the government’s scrappage scheme, our retail car sales are still up over 55 per cent, which proves that our products are increasingly chosen by private buyers who are attracted to the Vauxhall brand, and not just those who run our cars through their companies.”

With Vauxhall’s new Astra retailing for the first time on Friday 11 December; a refreshed Vauxhall Corsa due on the roads early next year; and the impressive Insignia also performing strongly, Vauxhall looks to be positioned strongly for 2011.

A 15-passenger van is very useful if you are traveling with a large group. In fact, they are ideal for bog family trips or when traveling with sports teams. These buses are comfortable and offer plenty room for the passengers. Some of these vehicles also come with cable televisions and DVD players to make your trip entertaining. Today, there are over half a million such vehicles that travel the roadways of the nation. The 15-passenger van is also used to transport high school and college athletes, day-care children, church groups and other groups.

The following are some helpful tips to find a 15-passenger van:

  1. You can always buy these kinds of four-wheelers. However, it is better to approach car rental companies and check if they rent such buses. There are some van rental companies that specialize in such rentals.
  2. In case you are planning to rent such vehicles, you must be at least 25 years old and be able to present your valid driver’s license. There are some car rental companies that may ask for proof of your present auto liability insurance.

Though there are some car rental companies that may charge you the same amount no matter how far you drive, others may follow strict rules and regulations. Such companies will usually charge you more in case you drive the 15-passenger van over the set mileage.

Herculiner Bed Liner — Tips For Success

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

A Herculiner bed coating costs only about one-fourth what a professionally applied bed liner will.  It’s natural to go for the do-it-yourself solution.  The two coatings are similar but not really equivalent.

A professional spray on liner, like one from Line-X or Rhino Coatings, derives it’s durability from the type of coating and from the thickness.  The material in these professional liners comes as a two-part paint that’s extra tough and extra fast drying.  The real key to the durability though is the thickness of the coating.  Professional liners consist of up to about 5 gallons of “paint.”  Put that much roll on bed liner paint on yourself and you’ll see very little savings over letting somebody else do it for you.

But for many applications, a paint on bed liner works well enough.  Especially for older trucks, the do-it-yourself coating certainly improves looks.  It adds a measure of protection at the same time.  Here’s how to make sure the coating works for you.

Cleaning the surface to be coated is nothing but boring work, but it is essential as a first step to get paint to stay on.  Cleaning must include using a solvent that will remove old grease and wax.  Just washing won’t do.  Paint can’t stick to a greasy waxed surface.

After cleaning comes some rough work.  It’s rough sanding that must happen.  No fine sanding is required but very rough sanding helps the paint stick and stay stuck.  On an older truck the sanding step is where you get to repair existing damage while you are at work.

Next, any bare paint should be spot primed.  Using a primer over the whole bed certainly can’t hurt, but really isn’t necessary.  Make sure to prime bare places though.

Actually applying the bed liner paint is the easiest part of the whole project.  After proper preparation. putting the paint on is so simple.  It may seem may seem that applying paint with a brush or roller produces inferior results compared to spray.  It’s not so.  Thick bed liner paint settles as it dries and all the roller or brush marks just fade away.

Herculiner bed coating works especially well on older trucks with damaged paint.  Getting the surface to be coated properly cleaned and sanded is key to a successful bed liner project.  The work to be done is simple but it does take time and effort.

Truck Beds — Dealing With Damage

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Truck beds that actually get put to use often end up with one kind of damage or another.  It’s easy enough to just turn over your pickup to a body shop for repair.  The problem with that approach is the price tag.  What about tackling a bed repair project yourself?  Here are 5 approaches to do-it-yourself truck bed fix-up.

Replacement Panels

Especially if rust is the villain, complete replacement of the damaged bed floor works best.  For many popular trucks you can buy the truck floor in sections.  That way you just cut out the bad part and graft in the new.  The new panel can be attached with rivets and then puttied in to match the existing panels.  A better way is to simply weld in the new sections and then prepare for paint.

Rust Converter

One powerful tool for dealing with rusty metal is chemical rust converter.  Made by several companies, these compounds are a paint on coating that actually changes rust to a different material.  What you end up with is a primer coat after the reaction takes place.  Then just paint on the finish coat right over the prime coat produced by the rust converter.

Sanding

Getting rid of rust requires some serious steps if you don’t take the chemical converter route.  Simple sanding may often not be enough, since the rust may hide in dips and flaws.  That’s why the best alternative for rust elimination may be blasting, sand blasting that is.  That process air blasts abrasive material to beat back the rust.  The problem is that more than just rust gets blasted away.  Blasting can blow away even sound metal too.

Touch-up Paint

Luckily, an internet search will probably show that you can get your paint with the proper paint code in spray cans or in small quantities by the bottle.  That way when the bed damage is corrected, the painting can be done with correct paint.

Roll On Bed Liners

Covering the damage means the actual repair need not be quite so professional.  Any repair should produce a sound rust-free surface.  But if you cover the surface after the repair, the actual repair appearance doesn’t much matter.  That’s where a simple roll on bed liner or another bed cover provides the finished appearance to cover the repair.

Truck beds take a licking over time when pickups actually do hauling jobs.  Fixing the damage can be left to the pros or you can tackle it yourself.  The do-it-yourself solutions may be good enough and far cheaper.

Truck Bed Cover — Soft Covers

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Truck bed cover choices are about more than just cost and looks.  Soft covers offer advantages over even some much more expensive cover designs.  Here are soft cover advantages and how soft covers differ.

Soft covers are the lowest priced option for a truck bed cover.  But there’s more.  For example, fiberglass tonneau covers tilt to provide access to the bed.  There’s a major problem with tilting covers though.  Cargo higher than the bed side rails won’t permit the lid to close.  That’s not very useful.

On the other hand, a roll-up soft cover lets you access the whole bed as easy as can be.  Plus you can haul loads of any height just by rolling away the cover.  But what about variation between roll up soft covers?

Sealing and closure differences account for most of the difference in price of soft covers.  And there is quite a difference in price of basic roll-up covers.

The cheapest covers usually feature snap closure.  As you can imagine, closing with snaps can be a major hassle.  Though this is minimized with designs where the snaps slide in the mounting rails.  That’s a sure way to get a better fit.

Pay a little more and you get zip style strips for sealing.  Better in some ways than snaps, the zippers are subject to fit problems too and can be a hassle to use over time.

Another popular closing method uses Velcro type strips along the cover edges to seal the top.  That way you can easily open and close the cover and it stays where you put it.  The more expensive soft covers often feature this closing design.  It’s a great way to get a tight fit that’s still very easy to open and close.

Truck bed covers don’t have to cost a huge pile of money to offer many features.  Soft covers beat more expensive designs in several ways.  The more the soft cover costs, the easier it is to use in most cases.  But for just a small investment you can get basic bed cover protection for your pickup.

Pickup Truck Bed Liner Options

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Pickup truck bed liner choices offer options that best suit different uses and different budgets.  Every type of liner has advantages, but each has disadvantages too.  Here are comparisons of your options.

Spray On Liners

Very popular partly due to the look, spray on liners custom fit every truck.  That especially is important if you have an older truck or a less popular model.  Spray liners are really high quality multi-part paint coatings that include lots of rubbery texture.

Though very durable, the coating can certainly be damaged.  That damage is repairable though just by respraying.  That’s why you usually get a great guarantee.

Look out for the one really big disadvantage.  It’s the high price which makes this less attractive.

Plastic Liners

Thick plastic liners offer more impact protection than most other options.  Plus the material virtually stops any chance of scratching the bed too.  Most common are one piece drip in liner, though multi-piece models like the DualLiner are a strong choice.

Watch for fit ton these.  A poorly fitting liner make vibrate and wear away paint under the liner.  That’s a perfect place for corrosion to begin.  Also poor fitting liners generate irritating wind noise too.

Carpet Rugs

Especially if you haul delicate cargo, a carpet bed liner makes good sense.  These usually work best underneath a tonneau cover or bed cap.  That’s not because the carpets can’t take weather.  It’s more a matter of keeping the material clean and dry.

Far less expensive than spray on liners. these offer luxury look and feel.

Rubber Mats

Easy to overlook, cheap rubber mats excel at protection.  The rubber soaks up just about any hit and elements scratch potential underneath the mat.

The disadvantage is you only get protection on the bottom of the bed, not on the sides.  With that said, this option certainly wins the price contest.  OFten these work well over another liner type.  It’s protection for the protection.

Do It Yourself

A roll on bed liner can result in a liner that looks almost just like a spray liner but at just a fraction of the professional model price.  It’s an especially attractive way to improve the look of an old truck for just a little cost.

The downside is the protection offered by these liners is much less than the professional spray coatings.  That’s because the paint used is not the same for one.  Also the coating is much thinner too.

Plus the do it yourself option is much more involved than just rolling on some paint.  The preparation for painting including cleaning and sanding is no trivial task.  It’s a lot of work really.

Truck beds rust without care and protection.  Often attempts at protecting the bed of a truck may result in more harm than good.  Choose your pickup truck bed liner carefully to get the best results.

Truck Parts For Older Pickups — Disappearing?

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Truck parts prices change partly by supply and demand just like anything else.  It’s been my observation that parts prices and availability for Chevy, Ford and Dodge trucks have been such that driving old trucks “forever” worked well.

Sheer numbers of these trucks on the road guaranteed a supply of used truck parts plus a demand for new parts too.  However with the closing of many parts plants, doesn’t it make you wonder where the parts will come from to keep older trucks on the road.

Spare parts for older trucks often were made in batches on regular production equipment and then stored until there was a call for a part.  At that time the part was shipped from inventory and then at some point the inventory level triggered an order for another run of parts to be produced.

I drive a 1976 Chevy C10 with about 50,000 miles on it.  Can you imagine going back just that far how many pickup part numbers have been built just for Chevrolet trucks?  The number is in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions.  All parts must be tracked and the manufacturing data available for these parts to be produced when needed.   In addition, production tooling and equipment must be ready and on hand to make parts when the existing stock drops to the reorder level.

My guess is that at some point in time some pieces of the truck parts system will just report that the parts requested are not available.  Already my review of the GM online parts site shows it stops well short of the 1976 model year.  That probably means a decision to drop older parts inventories and manufacturing has already been made, maybe.

That may mean that after-market parts makers will step in to fill the gap.  Probably only if tooling up to make parts is justified by a proven demand for a certain volume of pieces.  Otherwise, the investment is not justified.

Truck parts for older American pickups have historically been relatively cheap and easy to get.  That may change as the auto industry changes.  That means many serviceable and valuable vehicles will die an early death from lack of affordable service parts.  That surely seems like a shame.

Spray On Bed Liner Protection

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Spray on bed liner application protects truck beds from damage that can easily lead to rust and corrosion.  But what about protecting the bed liner itself from damage?  With the cost of a bed liner, it just makes sense to protect the liner too.

After all, spray on liners are paint coatings.  The paint includes texture to give it thickness.  It also includes very tough paint in the coating.  Usually it is even a two part material that dries fast and tough.  None of that means the lining is impossible to damage.

The guarantee that comes with liners does not guarantee that the liner will not be damaged.  What it guarantees is repair of a damaged liner.  That means a respray.  Until that recoat happens, you drive a damaged liner around.

It only makes sense to protect the liner itself, especially if rough hauling projects can be reasonably expected to scar or scrape a liner.

Really protection of a spray on liner is quite simple and cheap as well.

Actually a bed mat that slips in the pickup to cover the bottom of the bed will stop almost all damage to the liner as well as protecting from dents as well or better than any spray coating.

Either an inexpensive carpet rug or rubber mats protect the much more expensive liner for really low cost.  Carpet works especially well for easily damaged loads, like furniture for example.  Rubber mats work especially well for really abrasive hauling, like concrete blocks as an example.  Either is easy to remove and easy to store for the next time you need some help.

Spray on bed liner protection can include easy additions to protect an expensive liner with a very inexpensive mat.  Cheap bed mats protect bed liners and add even more cushioning to your pickup bed.

Bed Liners For Trucks — Premium Liners

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Bed liners of several kinds have become almost must-haves for pickups.  Without some kind of protection, pickup beds soon turn to rust buckets.  Simply using a pickup for casual hauling is bound to cause scratches, if not dents, and lead to corrosion in time.

Spray on bed liners have several advantages over other options.  Now these are offered as options even on new trucks.  Usually for a new truck the application will be done by a local franchise of one of the big name liner companies.

Spray liners are after all really a paint application over the existing bed paint.  But it is special paint.  Partly it is special because it dries and cures very rapidly.  The paint usually is a two part product mixed right at the spray gun.  Engineered to cure fast, that means the time to get the project done is very short.  Usually that means the truck only has to be at the applicator just a day or so.

Another major feature of the coating is thickness.  Up to one-fourth inch thick, the lining durability relates partly to the large volume of material applied.

The thickness of the coat means much paint can be torn or scratched away and the metal of the bed still is not touched.  It isn’t that the liner is so hard to damage, it’s that there is just so much of it there.

The guarantee that comes with liners is not that the liner won’t be harmed, it is that it will be repaired.  Repair just means a respray, that’s all.

Another basic feature of liners professionally installed is proper preparation.  Like for any paint coating, proper surface prep really is key to a coating that sticks.  Scrimp on surface prep and the coating likely will be gone with the wind.

That guarantee you get means the surface prep will get done and it will be done right.

Spray on bed liners work so well for a number of reasons.  It’s partly because of the material itself used in the coating.  But it is partly just the careful application too.  The guarantee you receive means the application must be done properly or the dealer will be forced to do it over again.

Bed Liner Spray On Advantages

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Alan Bullington

Bed liner application protects the truck bed on many pickups.  Spray on coatings work well for a number of fairly simple reasons.  Here are reasons to choose a spray on coating for your pickup.

Custom Fit

Drop in bed liners and custom carpet liners only come in sizes for some trucks.  For older trucks and less popular pickups, a spray coating may be the only option in a full coverage liner.  What’s more, with a spray liner you always get a perfect fit.  That may not be the case with some of the other liners.  And a poor fitting liner can lead to all sorts of problems.

Permanent

These coatings are on to stay.  No worries about replacing liners, since they are there to last.  Now most liners are UV resistant and not prone to fade either, so the look is stable over time.

Fast

Liner paint formulations result in fast curing and the time your truck is down for lining is very short.  That fast application time and fast cure time results from using special paints made in two parts.  The two parts are mixed at the paint gun and harden almost instantly and cure very rapidly also.

Guarantee

Part of the whole professionally applied package is the guarantee.  Now it isn’t a guarantee that you can’t damage a liner, it is a guarantee that the liner will be repaired.  That’s as simple as a respray.  And a respray, or recoat, can be done multiple times.  That guarantee is also your assurance that the coating will be applied properly.

See, the key to a good sticking coat is proper preparation before any spraying happens.  That prep will be done right, otherwise the applicator gets to do it all over.  That isn’t in his best interest.

Tough

Bed liner paint includes lots of rubbery texture for cushioning, but one of the real keys to success for bed liner coatings is very simple.  The liner material is put on very thick.  Up to about 5 gallons of paint make up a typical liner coat.  The coating is simply so thick that it is difficult to scratch through it.  That thickness explains why the truck bed is almost out of reach for anything that can damage the bed itself.  The liner takes the hit instead of the underlying metal of the bed.

Bed liner spray works well for a number of reasons.  Durability of liner coatings results for the material itself and also from the application methods too.
