5 More Skin Care Myths Dispelled

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Naomi Andrews

I have already written a lot about various myths about the skin and skin care but the misconceptions never cease.

Some of the skin care myths are more than just old wives’ tales. Rather, they have been passed on from generations to generations, from mothers to daughters and have become deep rooted in the minds of women. However, if we live under the illusion of these myths, we would never be able to take good care of our skin. It is important to understand whether the information you have is really a fact or mere fiction.

Here are some of the recent ones that I have come across.

Myth
Skin Care Routine just stops working after some time!
Many women claim that their skin care routine suddenly ceases to be effective and doesn’t work for them anymore.

Fact
It would not be correct to say that the skin care regimen stops working unless the products that you use have been reformulated with new ingredients. But if that is not the case, then it might be due to other factors.

The skin doesn’t really become immune to the effects of skin care products. However, environmental factors such as the weather conditions, aging process, pollution, and stress levels can definitely have an impact on the effectiveness of skin care products. For example, the skin has different skin requirements in the winter season as compared to the summer season. Also, skin care requirements change as one grows older and the skin becomes more mature.

Thus, it is not that the skin care routine ceases to work, rather, skin care products don’t show effects because the skin is changing. It is advisable to alter your skin care routine as per the conditions of the environment and age.

Myth

Chocolate causes Acne
I don’t know how many women with a love for chocolates refrain due to the fear of acne. Chocolates are often considered to a prime cause of acne by people across the globe.

Fact
This is not true. Chocolate doesn’t cause acne. Period. Acne is caused by hormonal imbalances and not because of intake of particular foods. What happens is, chocolate causes an imbalance in sugar levels that further leads to fluctuations in the hormonal levels. This hormonal disruption can sometimes cause a pimple or two. But this is not the same thing as triggering acne.

If you are prone to breakouts, you might as well avoid food that causes fluctuations in blood sugar levels. It’s better to adhere to a hormone-friendly diet.

Myth
Oily skin doesn’t need Moisturizer
Women often feel that applying moisturizer on oily skin will make the skin more greasy and oily and therefore choose to skip it altogether. However, this is not the right thing to do.

Fact
There are two types of dry skin
Lipid Dry (typically dry skin) and Dehydrated skin (skin that lacks moisture). Oily skin is generally dehydrated even though it contains excess sebum and when women use powerful cleansers to get rid of the excess oil, they just end up aggravating the problem.

It is important to understand that oil and moisture are two different things. Oily skin may lack moisture. The key is to use a good water based moisturizer that hydrates the skin without making it too oily.

Myth
More SPF provides more protection
Many women believe that if they use a sunscreen with an SPF of 100, it would be much better than a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30.. Unfortunately, the math doesn’t work that way in skin care.

Fact
An SPF 35 deflects 96.7% of the suns rays and an SPF of 100 deflects 99% of the suns rays! So with a jump of 70, it only protects an additional 2%. The FDA actually considered capping SPF at 50 at one time.

Myth
Foundation should be tested on the hand
This is perhaps the most propagated beauty myths. In fact, I’ve also seen many attendants and cosmetic stores advocate this.

Fact
No! Foundation should ideally be tried on the chin. It is important to understand that the skin on your hands and that on your face is different and so is the skin tone. So, if you want a foundation that looks good on your face, make sure you match it there.

Having Fantastic Skin has a lot to do with your diet

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Paul Ritchie

A lot of time we think that if we have a fresh hairstyle and trendy clothes we look great. Little bumps on our face are getting hidden away as much as possible with the help of the cosmetics, but many of us do not know that we might actually be hurting ourselves by using cosmetics for a long time and not trying to look young and fresh through different methods. This does not mean that we should never wear make-up, but excessive use of cosmetics cannot be a good thing for the skin. Just imagine wearing a lot of make up all they long to hide those little imperfections. Most of the cosmetics, especially the cheap ones contain all kinds of chemicals that can help us on short term and hurt us on long term. You use a foundation base or a powder to hide your skin blemishes and you get so used to the face you see in the mirror that you start believing it’s yours. Then one day when you decide to undergo a deep cleansing of your face you see that you still have the blemishes but you also have wrinkles. Now you start panicking and use even more make up to use those wrinkles too. Then you start thinking about some creams, lotions or gels that promise anti-ageing, about plastic surgery and how to regenerate your skin.

Having beautiful skin is possible at all ages but it requires a lot of self discipline and will. It also depends a lot on the way you live your life and the changes that you are willing to make. If you think your skin looks really bad and you spend more and more time analyzing yourself in the mirror consider visiting a dermatologist and ask for a specialist’s opinion. You can also consider visiting a beauty salon and set an appointment with the cosmetologist, but one single session is not going to help you too much. If you don’t want to waste money by going to a beauty salon and you are thinking that Hollywood stars have beautiful skin because they can afford it, then well, the answer is both yes and no. yes, Hollywood stars can afford to keep their skin young looking, but they are all doing everything from skin treatments recommended by specialists to anti-ageing creams and to the more common advices like for example making masks at home from different fruits or vegetables.

Most of us want to stay young forever or grow old beautifully and all this mostly because we want to be like the Hollywood stars and look like them. The truth is that a lot of time they spend hours in a row in the make up chair to look they way they do and sometimes they use cosmetic surgery to change what they don’t like. The anti-ageing process is something all the people involved in the cosmetics industry and not only want to know. Every month new creams, lotions, gels or similar appear on the market and claim to be the best product available. One thing to remember is that not all the products will do the job they advertise and more importantly what works for one person might not work for the other one. Having the skin Hollywood stars have can be achieved by common people too without paying the amount of money celebrities pay, but by being more conscious about their skin and their body. While anti-ageing creams and other skin related creams can help us improve the way we look and feel, there are several lifestyle changes we need to make and like in most cases when it comes to our health these are eating healthy, drinking a lot of water and exercising.

Turn the clock back on the aging process

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Paul Ritchie

It all sounds pretty bad, like a nightmare; a nightmare that more and more of us have when we get closer to a certain age. This nightmare is made even worse by seeing all the celebrities looking so good regardless of their age. The ageing process is part of our life. for different reasons and in the search of finding a way of being forever young, the cosmetics industry and the plastic surgeons made it all look like a nightmare. We all know that Hollywood stars look the way they do with the help of professional make-up and by spending a lot of money on plastic surgeries and skin treatments. The best thing deriving from all this industry of making one spend more money on plastic surgery and creating the perfect figure is the fact that people are more conscious about the way they look, about their skin and about the ways of protecting and slowing down the ageing process. There are several factors that influence the way our skin looks and feels and while we can control some of them by heaving a healthy life others can only be controlled, reduced and sometimes eliminated with the help of skin care creams, lotions, gels or serums.

However, there is hardly any treatment that can promise you to reverse the aging process overnight. That is of course when they say overnight they refer to a short period of time. Thousands of products created to enhance the way you look, to help you create perfect you are available on the market today. Some of them are clinically tested while others are just tasted on computer programs and simulations. There are different procedures from the simple cream or lotion application to the most complex surgeries and the results are different from person to person. The people from the entertainment industry and not only are spending a lot of money trying to create the prototype of the ideal woman and even man and this is all conveyed by the way movie starts and celebrities look. Skin care products with ingredients like collagen or retinol are trying to offer the possibility of having perfect skin and looking great without having a surgery. Botox injections are not today’s miracle anymore and being able to get rid of some imperfections from your face is more and more affordable every day.

Wrinkles and lines, crow-feet and spots are just a few of the way time leaves its fingerprint on our body. It is true that there are many things we can do to slow this down and some of the ways to do it are very effective, but they should be complemented by a healthy way of life. All the nutritionists, dermatologists and health providers in general recommend eating healthy, exercising, protecting our skin and taking care of our body. Since the face is the most exposed part of our body it gets damaged the first. This is also a sensitive part of the body and being extra careful is always a good thing especially in the polluted world we live in. trying to have a nice radiant looking skin is a thing we should all do or learn to do and today’s technological advance is on our side. More and more skin care products are especially designed to accommodate all types of skin and fight against the aging process. More and more skin care products are being made with as many natural ingredients as possible and as little chemicals in it as needed. Wanting to reverse the aging process or to stop the time is something we all want to do. Looking good is an important thing for a lot of people to feel good and feel more confident. Now looking younger than your real age is more and more an everyday thing and people are encouraged to try different skin care products that work for there type of skin and that can help them with their wrinkles, blemishes or other skin imperfections.

Different Types Of Body Wrap

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Thomas Moran

If you are a regular spa visitor, one of the things that you might commonly see in the list of services that they offer is “body wrap”. Body wraps have been around for quite some time now but has been primarily known for being a good way to lose weight, albeit a temporary one. In truth, body wraps were designed provide a slimming or toning effect to the body, rejuvenate the skin, and relax the muscles. It is, however, not for everyone especially those who have heart disorders, hypertension, or psoriasis.

The average length of a body wrap session is usually one hour, from the preparation to the unwrapping. This could still go longer depending on the type of body wrap. However, regardless of the type, a body wrap usually involves exfoliation before the mixture is slathered on the body. You would then be wrapped in plastic, mylar or hot towels.

One of the most common types of body wrap is the Thalasso or seaweed body wrap. This body wrap is usually aimed at detoxification while hydrating and firming up the skin. What happens is a hot towel dipped in seaweed solution is wrapped around your body for about an hour. After an hour, the wrap is removed. You can then rinse your body and have a moisturizer applied afterwards. This body wrap is recommended for people who have difficulties in the area of water retention, joint pain, sore muscles, and arthritis.

An oil wrap is another body wrap that most Bay Area skin care clinics offer.  In this process, aromatherapy oils are used in order to moisturize dry or dehydrated skin. Some of the most commonly used aromatherapy oils for this process are olive oil, eucalyptus oil, spearmint oil, peppermint oil, and tea tree oil. There are also some spa therapists who make use of aloe vera and chamomile.

If you want your skin to feel cleaner and be younger looking, you might want to try having a mud body wrap Bay Area clinics offer. Aside from making your skin feel tighter, mud wraps have also been proven to help treat eczema, acne, and body aches.

If you are not comfortable in having your body wrap done in a Bay Area skin care clinic, you can purchase body wrap kits and do it within the comfort of your own home.

Rejuvenating Your Body With Body Wraps

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Thomas Moran

For most people, the term “body wrap” is synonymous with weight loss. This is because body wrap used to involve the plastic wraps tightly wrapped around the body in order to induce temporary weight loss. Nowadays, however, body wraps are more associated with rejuvenating your skin.

There are two benefits that you could get from body wraps depending on what you use for a body wrap. Body wraps that are made from algae, seaweed, mud, or clay is one good way to detox your body, while body wraps made from shea butter and rich lotions are recommended for softening the skin.

There are a number of body wrap types. This includes algae wrap, chocolate wrap, Frigi Thalgo wrap, seaweed wrap, mud wrap, cellulite treatment wrap, herbal wrap, and paraffin wrap, among others. It is recommended that you check first with the spa therapist what you should wear before you drop by for a body wrap session some of these body wraps could lead to long lasting stains on clothes.

Generally, a body wrap done in a Bay Area body wrap center usually lasts for about 20 to 45 minutes. It usually starts with an exfoliation either via dry brushing or via salt scrub. After this, a mask made from algae, seaweed, mud, clay, lotion, or cream is slathered around the body. If the wrap is made from seaweeds, hot towels are commonly used to keep the seaweed clay moist. Otherwise, a plastic or mylar wrap would do. After this, the masked is then rinsed off. It is because of how the body looks like when wrapped that this process is also known as body cocoon.

However, if you are undergoing a mineral body wrap in any of the Bay Area body wraps center, you first need to have your body measurements taken before the wrap would be placed on to your body. The whole process, from the preparation to unwrapping, usually takes almost three hours although you need not worry about getting bored as you are allowed to move around in order to stimulate blood circulation. There are also body mineral wrap kits that you can purchase in order for you to do the process within the comforts of your home.

If you are raring to go to the nearest Bay Area body wrap center, you might have to check first if you have any heart condition, hypertension, diabetes, or psoriasis. These medical conditions could worsen if you undergo a body wrap session.

What Every Skin Needs

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Thomas Moran

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but how beautiful we become lies in our own hands. And since the biggest organ of our body is the skin, it is only right that we take extra care of it. Fortunately, finding ways on how to take care of your skin is not that hard since there are a number of resources available both online and offline. However, this does not mean that you can easily find what’s best for your skin.

Taking care of your skin means knowing what type of skin you have. Your skin care regimen would depend on whether you have an oily, normal, dry, or combination skin. Regardless of skin care, however, your regimen should include cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen.

Cleansing your skin is more than just washing your face with soap and water. If you have dry skin, using tap water might not be a good idea as this can cause your skin to lose moisture even more. Your best bet would be to use mineral water. There are also a number of skin cleansers available in numerous stores which you can use in place of commercial soap.

There are many ways by which you can exfoliate skin. You can choose from microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and retinoids. You can purchase kits off the shelf form your local beauty store. However, if you are not familiar with how exfoliation should be done, you can visit any San Jose skin care clinic and let them exfoliate your skin.

No matter what your skin type is, it is a must for you to moisturize. The only exception to this rule is when you have acne. Keep in mind, however, that moisturizing is not just about slathering on skin lotion. You should also drink plenty of fluids to ensure that your skin is fully hydrated. Be careful, however, of over moisturizing as this can cause clogged pores. Most Bay Area skin care experts agree that your skin is the best guide on how much moisturizer you should apply. If your skin feels too tight, you might want to put on more moisturizer.

San Jose skin care experts would also recommend that you put on a sunscreen whenever you have to go out. Too much exposure to the sun is one of the leading causes of wrinkles. Aside from this, too much sun can lead to sun spots or freckles as well as sun burn.

Caring For Different Skin Types

Wednesday, 20. January 2010

Author: Thomas Moran

One of the basic things that you need to figure out before you can start with any skin care regimen is what type of skin you have. Depending on the amount oil your skin may have, skin types are grouped into dry, oily, sensitive, combination or normal, and sun-damaged. The amount of oil that your skin has can be affected by several factors such as diet, amount of liquid intake, stress, and genes.

A skin that is of the dry type usually feels tight and is more prone to developing wrinkles and patches.  Since it contains lower level of sebum or oil, it has a tendency to be sensitive. Signs of chapping and cracking could mean that the skin is already extremely dry and dehydrated. In instances like these, your best course of action would be to increase your fluid intake while making sure that you regularly put on moisturizer. You must also avoid washing the skin on your face with commercial soap and tap water. Instead, go for mineral water and skin cleansers made specifically for dry skin types.

If your skin has unusually large pores and is consistently shiny, you might have an oily skin type. This skin type is particularly prone to acne, blemishes and blackheads, and is primarily caused by overproduction of sebum or oil. The best way to keep your oily skin healthy is to wash your skin at least twice a day using lukewarm water and soap. You should also watch what you eat as certain food types can stimulate oil production. Use also cleansers and moisturizers that were specifically prepared for oily skin.

Most skin care San Jose CA clinics recommend people with combination or normal skin types to wash the skin on their face area with non-soap cleansers. Since most combination skin features a T-zone, exfoliation should be done on this area in order to strip away any dead skin cells. Oil-free moisturizers, on the other hand, should be used on the normal or dry areas.

Broken capillaries and thin skin is the usual features of both sensitive and sun-damaged skin. Most skin care San Jose CA clinics recommend people with sun-damaged and sensitive skin to make use of water-based moisturizer in order to keep their skin supple. It is also a good idea to make use of sun block and keep skin exfoliation to a minimum. Drinking water and eating succulent fruits also help ensure that your skin is hydrated from inside out.

In order to rejuvenate the skin on other parts of your body, you might want to try visiting the various body wrap Bay Area centers for a session.
