Dissecting Microscopes

Friday, 22. January 2010

Author: Kathy Brasch

Most of us remember using microscopes when we were in biology class, watching microscopic organisms moving around, bumping into each other.  Although we thrilled to watch the action under the lens, we really didn’t pay much attention to the microscope itself.  If you were to purchase a microscope today you might be surprised to learn that there are several different types of microscopes available depending on your use.

The most common microscope is the compound microscope, which is meant for measuring at higher magnifications from 40X up to 100X.   The other type of commonly used microscope is called a stereo or dissecting microscope. It uses two eyepieces and two paired objectives.  It may use a built in light source from above, below, or none at all. Magnification is usually from 10X to 40X.

Stereoscopic dissecting microscopes have separate optical pathways for each eyepiece.  When viewing your sample you get a three -dimensional view of your specimens at relatively low magnifications.  These microscopes also have a large field and a longer working distance than what you find on compound microscopes.  Whereas compound microscopes are used for looking at slides, dissecting microscopes are meant for viewing larger samples.

There are two basic types of dissecting microscopes.  One style allows you to read at two fixed magnification settings, such as 10X and 20X or 10X and 40X.  The other style has the capability to magnify at many settings, or “zoom” rather than to be set at two stationary magnification points.   By turning a dial you can literally look at every magnification between two end points, usually 7X and 45X.  This greatly increases your ability to view samples.

Dissecting microscopes can be purchased with or without built-in lighting.  Built-in lighting involves an upper illuminator for reflected light (episcopic) and a lower illuminator for transmitted (diascopic) light.  The most common lighting is by halogen lamps, but you will find a lower fluorescent lamp in some models.  Fluorescent illumination is used for examining heat-sensitive specimens such as in embryo transplant work.  Accessory light can also be added to dissecting microscopes in the form of a ring light, coaxial illuminator or fiber optic light pipes.  Various color filters can be added for specific applications.

You can also vary the stand that your dissecting microscope body sits in, thus changing the working distance.  A typical dissecting microscope has a fixed stand with a rack & pinion for moving the body up and down.  This gives you a smaller working distance in which to work.  You can also purchase your dissecting scope on a boom stand, which greatly increases the space under the scope.  This also allows you to have the microscope stand out of the way when you are working with larger items which may normally interfere with the position of the stand.

Although dissecting microscopes always have at a minimum two eyepieces, you can add a third “eyepiece” or port for a camera system.  There is a wide array of camera systems available, running from digital to video.  Most cameras can be attached to this trinocular port with an adapter, and then linked through a USB port to the software in your computer.

Whether you are a biologist performing dissections, a technician building or repairing circuit boards, a paleontologist cleaning and examining fossils or a hobbyist who needs to work with your hands on small objects such as rocks & bugs, you will find a dissecting microscope to be a very useful tool.

ANIMAL LOVE AND CARE IN ISLAM AND OTHER RELIGIONS

         BY                   PROF DR GHULAM MOHYUDDIN WANI

            The love of the animals is not the new slogan of the modern ethics alone .Many years before the first Bishop of Athens has said that truth does not enter the soul which loved not animals. I had heard of some tales of the Muslim lord and nawabs having spent thousands of rupees on the marriage of their pet dogs .

           When they were ridiculed on this spending he has made a legend. He took his son on the top of the place which was few stories above the ground.Closed all the doors and windows and asked him to jump from the top. All thought he is run mad and mocked at him. Then he Put  his dog in the similar situation and called him in distress, the dog jumped breaking his  legs in the endeavour. Thus he answered all question to his spending on his pet.

        Here we do learn that animals are more loyal to man than what he is to them. From times immoral animals have been helping human to perform many tasks.

           Many stories are in the literature when dog has helped him to come out in difficult situation. We do sometimes see that animals have so much affection for the man who once cares for them that they never forget his love and affection .I have never seen or heard of a animal hurting his master but have seen many sons careless and leaving their own parents and other human beings in distress. Goats have been helping the people in deserted conditions .Animal do recognize and recipocorate the love and affection one gives them, they do have revenge qualities too and literature is full of reports while wild beasts have recognized the man who endangered them and killed them before himself being killed.

The animal ethic is not new Islam the religion which is thought to be wrongly linked cruel to the animals has been asking for their protection and well fare. Below we reproduce the paper of an professor from Iran who details the Islamic principles for animal welfare enunciated much before 1980 when the modern animal welfare came into exisistence.Several years has elapsed since the societal recognition of the issue that not only people should but animals too need your care and attension.

Biomedical education as a social concern for laboratory animal’s welfare rises. However, the Quran, the holy book of God too preaches the love for the animals .The love for the animals is as essential as the love for any human kind.The animals and all the orhter creatures are told to be preaching and subjugating to God and GOD alone.

Book of Islam, as well as Hadiths contain the obligatory ways to keep and treat animals since more than 1430 years ago ,as such no muslim can be and should be brutal to any livining creatures

According to Islamic principles, humanity is not allowed to do everything to the living things and must traet them with respect.The master of any animal has to provide him with proper food and shelter.It wrong to leave them unattended in old age , as most of the people do even with cows and calves if they are not economic.We have seen many old parents yawning to see their sons and daughters in old age.Even in Asian countries the western culture of nuclear families have necessiated parental home.We here in India here many dreadful stories of the cruelity to men and women in old age,Therefore a love for the animals is essential to create a feeling for the life on this planet.LOVE OF LIFE IS ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT OF WOTLD PEACE Hunting of young birds for pleasure is forbidden by Islam. From the Islamic viewpoit animals represent GODS MIGHT.The might and wisdom of God is more important saver of the animals Several Islamic manuscripts state that animals have their own position in the world and humans are responsible for the facilities and  animals’ health Islam determines the living costs of animals and orders humanity to respect and not to abuse the animals.Quran says  ”Certainly, there is no one who has been created without the will of the as such no man has an athourity to be cruel to them

Many scholars in the Islamic world have discussed the ethics of animal welfare a muslim is duty bound to follow the guidelines of the God.Let us pray all of us irrespective of gender,religion,race shall start loving animals.Yes we leave it to you eat or not to eat an animals ,as they are created for this purpose,but yes their eating is not a binding but an option.They have to be even kliied or sarcrified polietely.Quran does not allow sacreficing an animal infront of another animal.Here in this world we kill and slaughter the humans what to talk of animals,Beware man you have to answer your deads ,do good now to have enterrence to peace in the heavens.

The cost on the energy is killing us there is immense cost on management of our automobiles and man! It’s so difficult to pay these huge amounts of bills. And as we know the fossil fuel also becomes scare In the need to develop substitute forms of energy it is getting more and more difficult for the people. Huge amount of people are rotating to without charge renewable power to supplement their electricity bills. In this article we will discuss 5 excellent reasons to construct economical solar panels

1) Energy for the sun

We all know sun has the superlative power of energy and it is free and available each day of the year. No one is going to charge for it and it will be exist for the next millions of years, in this case, it is the mean ahead of man’s instantaneous time horizon

2) Converting the suns energy

We can easily convert suns energy into the solar panels and it is absolutely pollution free. There are no hideous greenhouse gas emissions. The climatic change in future can also be stopped by installing the solar panels because they are 100% safe and sound to the environment.

3) Alternative energy systems.

We all know the cost of the energy has risen and more and more people are trying to build alternative energy systems and it has become more economically attractive. In the augmented producer competition and machinery development has gradually diminish the expenses of the panels

4) Cheap solar system power

There are immense amount of cheap and valuable stock available for the solar panels in the market. We just have to locate the sources, is the solution to construct the inexpensive solar power system. Some of the people are building these systems for just a couple hundred dollars.

5) Your own solar power system

Constructing your own solar power system is very easy anyone who has the basic skills and few simples’ tools can make the system in few hours. The happiness resulting from finishing ones personal solar power system is just one of countless rewards

Nature is the biggest source of energy but unfortunately man has not given importance to it. But, today because of energy short fall in world and with the continuous increase in its demand, obtaining energy requires high costs. Because of that people are now directing towards energy produced by using nature such as winds and sun. Sun can provide huge amount of energy but unfortunately it has been neglected. The sole reason for this is that people were unaware of this concept until now.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN SCHOOLING

KEY POINTS

  1. Public education is the largest employer in this country.
  2. Some of the reforms, as a result of the critical reports issued in the early 1980s, have been successful while others have failed.
  3. The majority of the general public believe schools have stayed the same or gotten worse during the past five years.
  4. The purposes of today’s schools go way beyond the original purposes of religious and academic training.
  5. The melting pot theory has never been fully realized; many diverse cultural groups retain distinct identities and are represented in public schools.
  6. To improve the quality of teachers, many states have initiated reforms including competency tests, better salaries, merit pay, incentives, merit pay incentives, and stiffer entrance requirements into teacher education programs.
  7. Conservative groups played a major role in the educational reform movement of the 1980s.
  8. Changing enrollment patterns continue to create problems in planning for public education.
    1. The general future outlook for public education is excellent.

CHAPTER 1–INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN SCHOOLING

A.    OVERVIEW

Chapter 1 presents information regarding the status of public education in this country. Specific content focuses on the magnitude of education, current trends, effective schools, and future possibilities in public school programs.

B.    KEY TERMS–DEFINITIONS

  4. more control of the education process by the family.

CRITICAL REPORTS – the most critical report was A Nation at Risk issued in 1983 by the National Commission of Excellence in Education.

CULTURAL PLURALISM – pluralists reject the traditional Americanizing function of the public school because it has meant assimilation and acculturation into the white, middle class pattern of American Society; a realization that the melting pot theory of American culture had not occurred and probably would not occur.

CURRICULAR REFORM – a back-to-the-basics reform movement started in the 1970s. Many believe the basic curriculum should have greater emphasis.

DECLINING ENROLLMENTS – changing enrollments have a major effect on the educational system:

  1. affecting state funding;
  2. impacting on the number of teachers needed;
  3. altering class sizes;
  4. causing redistricting of school boundaries;
  5. changing school plant needs.

HOME SCHOOLING – a conservative movement by parents to formally educate their children at home or in a small group setting.

MELTING POT – the theory that people from all cultures form a common bond.

MERIT PAY – a plan of providing extra pay for superior performance by teachers.

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION – a concept predicated upon a fundamental belief that all people must be accorded respect, regardless of age, race, sex, economic class, religion, nationalism, physical or mental ability; innovative ways for dealing with the education of minorities.

NEA - National Education Association, one of the two major teacher unions: NEA is the larger and more powerful of the two– with 2.2 million members nationwide.

NEW RIGHT – a coalition that includes traditional conservative groups and certain fundamentalists religious groups who advocate extreme viewpoints.

PUBLIC EDUCATION – free, government-supported schools open to all children.  Note: Resident alien children and illegal immigrant children are allowed to attend USA public schools.

REFORM REPORTS – critical reports issued in the 70s and 80s by education reform groups that listed many solutions to the problems faced by public education.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS – a division of public school programs within a state.

TAX REFORM – a tax reform movement that is funding increased taxes for educational reform.

  1. What were the major criticisms voiced in the reports on education in the early 80s?
    1. Major portions of the public are functionally illiterate, as are many of our 17 year olds.
    2. Science and math participation was down as were science and math scores.
    3. More than 40% of our high school students were in a general curriculum rather than a college preparatory one.
    4. Students in this country spend less time in school and less time studying than in most other industrialized countries.
    5. Teachers were coming from the bottom of their graduating classes–both high school and college–partly because the pay was $17,000 on the average for a teacher with 12 years experience.

3.    What is the status of reforms initiated during the early 80s?

The very substantial and ever increasing dollars spent for education have not yet given us the results our children deserve.

  1. What is the purpose of public education?

The original purpose was to teach students to read well enough to be able to understand their Bible readings. It evolved to teaching the Three R’s of Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. Now we expect our schools to teach everything from the basic R’s to include civic, vocational, artistic, and personal goal instruction and fulfillment.

5.    What goal is the Conservative movement playing in public education?

The New Right believes our schools have gotten away from their purposes and from traditional values. They are lobbying for

  1. reduction or removal of extra-curricular activities (all of them);
  2. more academic emphasis;
  3. emphasis on moral education;
  4. reinstatement of school prayer;
  5. more family control of the educational process. They are attempting to write legislation that the states can all copy. They want to promote creationism, to censor textbooks and library books, to promote interests of “Christian” schools, to end the unions and their influence, and to fight “secular humanism.”

Some Christian values promoted in the curriculum by the Conservative movement include:

  1. promotion of two-parent families with the father working and the mother at home;
  2. sexual abstinence before marriage;
  3. abstinence from smoking, drinking, and drugs;
  4. the immorality of gay and lesbian lifestyles;
  5. forbidding abortion;
  6. patriotism;
  7. obedience to and respect for authority;
  8. politeness;
  9. courtesy;
  10. honesty;
  11. prayer;
  12. humility;
  13. reverence for God.
  14. What has been, and is emerging as, the federal government’s role in public education?

The federal government’s role has been one of a watch dog and a guide dog combined. It was supposed to ensure that the schools in all areas of the country were adequately run and adequately funded. The true failure has been in the short-sighted view of “adequate” achievement.

  1. What is multicultural education?

It began as a movement to promote racial equality and harmony. Americanization has meant blending into/with the white dominant middle class. Correcting errors of omission, stereotyping, and misinformation, as well as information dissemination, has been replaced/absorbed by multicultural education. Now the goal is to assimilate reliable cultural pluralism into the overall curriculum, a concept predicated upon a fundamental belief that “all people must be accorded respect, regardless of age, race, sex, economic class, religion, physical, ethnic origin, or mental ability.”

8.    What teacher organizations have influence in education?

NEA – National Educators Association

AFT – American Federation of Teachers

Many leading authorities believe these organizations are losing authority and influence. Many people believe strong unions are a barrier to educational reforms. They have huge lobbying budgets.

9.    What are some characteristics of effective schools?

  1. Strong administrative leadership that includes the principal:
    1. having a clear vision about the desired direction of the school;
    2. having a commitment to improvement of instruction;
    3. encouraging participative decision making;
    4. serving as a buffer for teachers so that they can devote maximum time to working with students.
    5. Safe and orderly environment that includes:
      1. working conditions that support the efforts of teachers to address specific problems of their students;
      2. environment conducive to teaching and learning.
      3. Emphasis on instruction in the basic skills including:
        1. the school having a commitment to the basic skills as instructional goals;
        2. basic skills being the foundation for higher order thinking skills.
        3. High teacher expectations of students to include:
          1. setting high performance standards for students;
          2. providing specific instructions and are sensitive to individual differences;
          3. using clear and appropriate rewards to recognize student work.
          4. Monitoring and reporting of student performance including:
            1. using systematic methods to assess student progress;
            2. aligning curriculum across subject areas and grades;
            3. matching curriculum, desired outcomes, and assessment activities.
            4. Necessary resources to meet objective including:
              1. making available sufficient personnel and materials in the school;
              2. providing sufficient time for instructional planning, staff development, and adapting new innovations;
              3. providing opportunities for professional growth.
              4. Culture of the school including:
                1. positive human interactions among students and teachers;
                2. continuous growth and development of students and teachers;
                3. state-of-the-art instructional practices and strategies for teaching and learning.

D.    DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND EXERCISES

1.    List some of the criticisms presented in A Nation At Risk.

  1. 23 million U.S. adults are functionally illiterate;
  2. 13% of all 17-year-olds & 48% of minority 17-year-olds are functionally illiterate;
  3. SAT scores declined from ’63 to ’80;
  4. science achievement scores of 17-year-olds declined in ’69, ’73, and ’75;
  5. remedial math classes in college increased by 72% from ’75 to ’80;
  6. number of students in general curriculum in high schools increased to 42%;
  7. 31% of high school graduates completed intermediate algebra;
  8. 25% of credits earned by general track high school students were in PE, health, remedial math, English, and work outside the school;
  9. students in other industrialized countries spend more time on science and math;
  10. 20% of all four-year universities had to accept all students from state high schools;
  11. 50% or more of credits to graduate could be electives in 13 states;
  12. U.S. students spend less time in school than many other industrialized countries;

m.  average school provided only 22 hours of instruction per week;

  1. too many teachers came from bottom of high school class and bottom of college class;
  2. average salary for teachers with 12 years experience was $17,000.

2.    What are the status of the educational reforms initiated during the early 1980s?

  1. SAT and ACT scores either dropped or remained static;
  2. minority students increased their scores;
  3. the graduate rate dropped between ’85 and ’86;
  4. average teacher pay had risen 38%;
  5. average pupil spending increased by 50%;
  6. twelve states instituted minimum competency testing for grade promotion and twenty-four other states planned to implement minimum competency testing.

3.    What is the magnitude of public education in the United States?

Public education in the United States is big business. Some of the emphasis of school districts and regulators needs to be taken off of the business end of things and concentrated on the education end of things. Some 54 million students are directly affected, along with the teachers and administrators. Suppliers, knowing they have a captive market, are allowed to gouge schools on a regular basis, just as they do other government entities. Our schools deserve a fair shake.

4.    What effect does declining enrollments have on schools?

  1. affects state funding;
  2. impacts on the number of teachers needed;
  3. alters the class size;
  4. causes redistricting of school boundaries;
  5. changes school plant needs, buildings, and grounds.

Instructional programs are affected. The areas most affected are language arts, social studies, science, fine arts, and foreign language. This results in fewer course offerings and fewer professional positions in these areas.

5.    What is the role of the federal government in education?

Reagan’s White House began returning responsibility to the states and localities. As a result, federal spending in education was reduced.

Again, the federal government’s role has been one of a watch dog and guide dog combined. It was intended to ensure that schools in all areas of the country functioned properly and were adequately funded. The true failure has been in the short-sighted view of “adequate” achievement. President George W. Bush is planning to initiate numerous educational reforms during the 2000s.

6.    What are estimations for schooling in 2002/2003?

In the United States:

  1. over 25% of the people are students or are employed by schools or colleges;
  2. of the approximately 250 million people there are:

1… 54.5 million students in public elementary and secondary schools;

2. . 14.3 million students in higher education;

3… 3.6 million faculty and teachers;

4. . 3.9 million non-instructional personnel;

  9. there are approximately 2,744,000 elementary and secondary teachers, of which approximately 2,391,000 serve in public schools and 353,000 serve in private schools;
  10. the average salary for an experienced teacher is $39,385, for a beginning teacher $28,515;

m.  approximately 30% of teachers are male; approximately 70% are female;

  1. the dropout rate among African Americans 16 to 24 years old dropped from 28% in 1992 to 13% in 2002; for all 16- to 24-year-olds was 12% in 2002, down from 15% in 1992;
  2. in 2002, (persons between ages 25 and 29) – approximately 85.8 million persons earned high school diplomas (includes GED, equivalency certificates, etc.); 23.6 million persons had attained four or more years of college;

Long-term Lack of Sleep Can’t Be Made Up

Friday, 22. January 2010

Author: melon

If you are in the case of lack of sleep in consecutive weeks, you may choose to have a long sleep on a Saturday or Sunday, which may make you feel refreshing. But in fact, it will give you a false sense of security. New research shows that it is not so easy to make up for long-term lack of sleep. Scientists have been studied on the effect of short-term of lack of sleep and long-term of lack of sleep, they found that people who are long-missing sleep may be able to wake up very quickly into the normal state, but later in the day, the reaction rate will gradually slow down, even if they had tried to make up for the former lack of sleep a night.

In today’s increasingly busy society, this study has important significance of the security warning, not only for those people who need to shift the case, but also for those people who have less than six hours of sleep each night. Daniel Keenboshi, person in charge of the study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said we know that a row 24 hours without sleep will affect your performance whatever you do, this effect is equivalent to driving with drinking too much alcohol. What’s worse, the effects will be increased tenfold if people are the long-term lack of sleep at night. A statement from U.S. National Institutes of Health is that adults need to sleep 7-9 hours a day in order to maintain good health. The long-term lack of sleep will increase risk of suffering disease such as the damage of memory and decline in immunity. A more direct effect is the reaction rate will slow down if long-term lack of sleep. Driving with dozing off is the main reason leading to crashes and other accidents.

The new study reveals how the two different sleep driving force have an impact on the brain, one is in the normal awake state, the other is a few days or weeks in a row the case of lack of sleep. Friedman Harris, who did not participate in this new study, said the study is an important warning for those death-defying workmen with a few hours sleep a day. At the same time, Harris had warned: “Do not think a long time sleep on the weekend will make up for the sleep, it is simply not the case.”

The Avatar Would Trigger Depression and Even Suicide

Friday, 22. January 2010

Author: melon

An article entitled “How to resolve the dumps due to live without the planet of Pandora” has posted on the website of “Avatar to the Forum” (Avatar-Forum.com). This message has attracted thousands of fans just like the film did. A 17-year-old Swedish fan said:” I saw Avatar yesterday, this morning I woke up, I feel that the world has become dark, as if I entire life, I’ve done and things are being worked for all meaningless. I can’t find the reason to move forward, I live in a dying world.” Another fan named Mike is even more extreme, he said:”After seeing the beauty of Pandora’s planet and living there satisfied beauties, I hope I can become one member of them, I even wonder if the suicide can let me reborn on Pandora planet, if so, I will do it.” There are comments wrote by fans:”The most frustrating thing is that we can’t do anything, because we are aware that the planet Pandora exist only in imagination.”

The film directed by James Cameron and the production team have created a magnificent and diverse planet Pandora, where there are nearly 300 meters high towering trees, colorful flowers and grasses as well as mountains which is able to float in mid-air. What’s more, plants will be shined in the evening light as the Garden of Dreams in general. Film realistic 3D effects lead to the audience on the ground, you can almost join with the hero riding giant bird soaring in the mountains. A comment from Daily Mail in British, most people will be fascinated by the realistic visual effects the film made. In the “Avatar” official website, one fan even called for establishing a common tribe.

Dr. Stephen Kunzel from American Psychiatric said: “The virtual world is not a reality, and it will never become a reality. but the” Avatar” reach the peak of visual effects, it uses the best technology to create the virtual world, this makes the real world even less perfect.” Another psychologist believes that over-indulging in the film will give people a normal life in trouble. There is no clear life goal in the real world for a lot of fans, they often feel lonely. Avatar has become the window for venting their frustrations.

Global warming prevention

Friday, 22. January 2010

Author: parry

Global warming refers to the Earth’s air and oceans gradually heating up to a point that disrupts balance, a problem that is continually getting worse. It sounds like a problem too massive for any one individual to take on, but it really isn’t. Combining any few of these suggestions can make more of a dramatic effect than most people understand. The goal is to emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Delicious Reddit Stumble Upon Facebook Google Flag Article Instructions Difficulty:  Easy Step

1. Drive less. Take bikes, walk or carpool whenever possible.
2. Consider investing in a hybrid or electric vehicle to help prevent against further global warming.
3. Replace all the lightbulbs in and around your home with energy-efficient fluorescents that use fewer watts for the same amount of light.
4. Clean or replace your filters monthly.
5. Choose energy-efficient appliances when it’s time to buy new ones.
6. Decrease your air travel.
7. Wash clothes in cold water and line-dry whenever possible.
8. Use a low-flow showerhead, which will lessen the hot water used but not drop your water pressure in the shower.
9. Cut down on your garbage—buy fewer packaged materials to prevent further global warming.
10. Unplug electronics when they are not in use, because they still take up energy. At the very least, turn items off when they’re not being used.
11. Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have a full load, and if available, use the energy-saving setting.
12. Insulate your home better, and don’t forget to repair or replace worn caulking or weather-stripping. Insulate your water heater.
13. Buy recycled paper products and recycle as much of your waste as possible.
14. Bring your own reusable canvas grocery bags when grocery shopping.
15. Plant a tree.
16. Have an energy audit done on your home so you can find the trouble areas and fix them.
17. Use nontoxic cleaning products.
18. Shop locally for food. A farmer’s market is an excellent place to visit. And choose fresh food over frozen foods. Fresh takes less energy to produce.
19. Keep your car tuned up, and check tire pressure often to save gas.
20. Eat less meat and more organic foods in your diet to do your part in preventing global warming.

What does a GHS Label and SDS incorporate?

Friday, 22. January 2010

Author: Editor123

The GHS is a common and consistent approach to defining and classifying hazards, and communicating hazard information on labels and Safety Data Sheets or SDS. The GHS will cover all hazardous chemicals, which includes substances, products, mixtures, preparations, etc. It will provide an internationally agreed upon system of hazard classification and labeling. The target audiences include workers, consumers, transport workers, and emergency responders. Under this system, chemical substances and mixtures will be classified according to their physical, health, and environmental hazards. However, this includes ingredients that meet the criteria for carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction or specific target organ toxicity in concentrations exceeding the cut-off limits for SDS specified by criteria for mixtures as well.

In order to author a GHS SDS one must incorporate the following instructions according to the GHS guidelines. Signal words need to be incorporated such as DANGER for more severe categories and WARNING for less severe categories. The SDS author has to pay close attention to the wording used in the SDS. Phrases such as “not applicable”, “not relevant”, or leaving blank spaces in the health effect section can lead to confusion and misunderstanding and should not be used. For health effects where information is not available, this should be clearly stated. Precautionary statements should be chosen carefully in order not to mislead the user of the SDS which should incorporate the following: Precautionary, Prevention, Response, Storage and Disposal stamens. Minimum information required in an SDS are the following 16 section headings:

1.Identification
2.Hazard(s) identification
3.Composition/information on ingredients
4.First-aid measures
5.Fire-fighting measures
6.Accidental release measures
7.Handling and storage
8.Exposure controls/personal protection
9.Physical and chemical properties
10.Stability and reactivity
11.Toxicological information
12.Ecological information
13.Disposal considerations
14.Transport information
15.Regulatory information
16.Other information

How ever a GHS label should be as follows; the GHS hazard pictograms, signal words, and hazard statements should be located together on the label. Color can be used on other areas of the label to implement special labeling requirements such as the use of the pesticide bands in the FAO Labeling Guide, for signal words and hazard statements or as background to them, or as otherwise provided for by the competent authority. Guidelines which need to be followed in order to author a label are the following:

1.Allocation of label elements
2.Reproduction of symbol
3.Reproduction of hazard pictogram
4.Signal words
5.Hazard statements
6.Precautionary statements and pictograms
7.Product and supplier identification
8.Multiple hazards and precedence of information
9.Arrangements for presenting the GHS label elements
10.Special labeling arrangements
