Improve Your Triathlon Swim By Improving Efficiency

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Josh Stevens

If you are a competitive swimmer either in the pool or open water swims for triathlons, you can improve your times by training but can be limited by genetics. Just like running or cycling, there are those that just are born with that extra edge. They seem to naturally do better at their sport than others.

If you are a triathlete, you can improve your swim time through improving efficiency and just getting stronger by swimming. If you can become very efficient at swimming you will be saving some energy for the next stage of the event. This can be more important to many than finishing the swim up front because they may be stronger on the bike or running.

You need to get in a pool and swim laps, if you are just starting don’t over do it at first. You want to avoid an injury like swimmers shoulder that can be attributed to over doing it too early. Every week add more laps. Make one day a week your long distance day, this will help increase your aerobic capacity. If you’re doing a long distant triathlon you could be swimming one to two miles.

Swimming in the pool is different than getting out in the open water. If you have the ability to do so, go swim in a lake or the ocean to get the feel for it. Also when you are racing, there is going to be a lot of people in the water jockeying for position at the start. This can be intimidating for many and you can get hit with an elbow or foot if not careful. You can hold back some till the crowd thins out then go for it.

Inflatable Boat Safety is Essential

Inflatable Boat Safety is Essential

Boating safety may seem like a nuisance or too much extra hassle. After all, boating is supposed to be fun, right? Boating safety is not rocket science, and if you exercise common sense and do some planning ahead of your boating excursion, you should be able to have safe boating experience. The reality is that, generally speaking, most folk that are preparing for a day out on the water forget this and do not tend to focus on the safety issues at all.

Knowing and following proper inflatable boat safety protocols is not only a good idea, it is essential to your continued enjoyment of the boat and might just save you from injury or death. What safety concerns might you have? How do you ensure that you are following the right safety techniques? Here, you will find a wide range of concerns that are vital to inflatable boat and inflatable kayak safety.

The good news is that boating accidents and fatalities have been on the decline over the last twenty years.Accidents involving Personal Watercraft have almost doubled in the last few years. Accident risks multiply at busy times such as July 4th weekend, when recreational boating increases on popular lakes and rivers. The chance of being involved in an accident cannot be completely alleviated but can be reduced by using good judgment, courtesy, common sense and knowledge and obedience of boating safety laws.

Your first concern should be determining what safety protocols are required in the area in which you are boating. Many local areas have different requirements, so it is important that you know what rules apply to the area in which you are using your boat. You can find these with your local parks department or the parks department of the area you are visiting.

Another important part of inflatable boat safety is to ensure that you have the right safety equipment with you at all times. Life vests are not only required, but can save your life (or the life of your passengers). In addition, you should have a repair kit in case of punctures, the correct number of paddles or oars, a map of the area and any licenses of permits required to boat in the area. All inflatable boats come with a specified occupant or weight capacity. Do NOT exceed this. This rating is set by the manufacturer for a good reason. If you exceed this limit, you can cause catastrophic problems that might result in damage, injury or death.

There are many reasons why you may be interested in a “Ladies Only” sailing week with us:
– clean smelling heads
– no shouting
– nice cups of tea
– want to learn but often find that when sailing with a mixed crew that the boys jump in first
– make new friends with similar interests
– need a break away from the family or work.

Whatever the reason is we would love for you to join our experienced female Yachtmaster Instructors on the water.

Our one week courses are run once a month (or more often if demand dictates). You can follow a RYA syllabus (from Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper up to Yachtmaster), or just sit back and relax – it’s up to you. You join us on the Friday just like our other courses, and then after the safety brief and a quick sail on the Saturday, we whisk you off for a relaxing treat to the local spa. Nicely relaxed we leave our base marina behind on the Sunday and the delights of La Gomera, before returning at the end of the week to our base marina.

The other option is why not get a group of friends together and join us for a long weekend starting on the Friday and finishing on the Monday evening – great for a “hen” weekend or just some sailing with the girls.

Whatever your sailing experience we will do as much, or as little, as you wish – sunbathing in our year round sunshine or hoisting the sails for a great sail. Whatever you choose its great fun as its all girls or all ages together.

Where to Find Discount Sailing Gear

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Jay Royster

If you are a beginner in sailing, you will soon discover the large variety of sailing gear that is out on the market. As great as it would be to own all of this gear, not all of it is required for sailing. However, in order to stay safe while sailing, there is certain gear that you will absolutely need on your boat.

Should an emergency occur, having first aid kits, life jackets, and additional safety equipment are essential to ensure the care of passengers on your boat. Radio and navigation should also be present especially when sailing in the open seas or on the coastline.

Finding Discount Gear

If you search in the right places, you can find discount sailing gear in a variety of places.

First, the sailing gear can be found at different swap meets or flea markets within a sailing community. Often, sailing clubs will hold a swap meet once or twice per year enabling people to find used gear for a fraction of the cost.

In addition to these sailing clubs, advertisements in newspapers and sailing magazines offer used gear for sale. These are great options since you can go and check the condition of the gear before buying it.

There are also some online auctions that sell used gear, but these are a little more difficult to use since the items cannot be thoroughly checked before purchasing them. However, many of these online sites have a guarantee or a checks and balances system in place so that people are protected from fraudulent sellers.

Armchair Fishing or Float Tubes For Under $100.00

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Doreen Murgatroyd

The definition of Armchair Travel is ‘to participate or experience indirectly or vicariously’. (Vicariously means taking the place of another). In other words, from the comfort of an armchair we indirectly participate in the experiences of someone else.

Armchair Travel – how many of us remember the pleasure we derived from paging through the National Geographic, viewing photos of places we would never get the chance to see, or reading about life elsewhere and enjoying the stimulation of new sights and unusual shenanigans of others.

How many people read the tales written by authors like William Dalrympole and James Michener, authors whose work revealed life, the odd, the highs, the lows, the marvels of lives lived in places our own feet were unlikely to touch.

Both men left legacies for writers of the future, notably Mitcheners Centre for Writers.

However, the point is, the audience for this type of information imparting has grown a lot smaller. TV channels, broadcasting, but most of all air travel, and in the last 30 years or so – budget air travel – has changed all that.

Take a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, for example. A once in a lifetime concept for Jews or Christians (if they were fortunate, that is). Now over 8 million make the pilgrimage each year. Before that, it was prayer, meditation, heightened imagination, joining with others of like mind to remember and talk about past wonders, reading about and following in the footsteps of Jesus or the Prophets.

One no longer needs to read much in order to gain information to other places. It can be streamed into one’s living room and the opportunity to travel to places of interest is now affordable for a great majority of people.

Such are the changing ways of life today.

Armchair travel though, has an element of comfort about it. It is not called ‘wooden bench travel’ or ‘wooden chair travel’ or ‘wooden plank travel.’ There’s this nuance of relaxation and comfort.

So it is with Armchair fishing. Here comfort is taken to the ultimate height. The inflatables fill out to look exactly like armchairs with their comfortable arm rests and padded backs. But how can a craft so luxuriously stress-free be operated? The designers have thought of that.

Navigation and tracking are issues which have been considered and are built in to the design. They are also called Float Tubes. Relevant because all fishing boats float.

Here is an opportunity to enjoy your own armchair fishing experience from your own Float Tube. No need to hear about it second hand, from the experiences of another.

Of course, some of them are more expensive than others, but for a start, they are inexpensive, innovative, comfortable and f

Modern and Traditional Fish Surfboards

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Chris Warner

Fish surfboards are quite common in the lineup, especially on small wave days. The term “fish” is applied to many types of surfboards however. So just what is a fish surfboard? There are two main types:

Traditional Fish – Also called the retro-fish. Very wide surfboards (around 22 inches) at around 6ft in length. They are also quite thick, usually 2.75 to 3 inches. Sometimes these have twin deep keel fins, much like 1970’s fish but more common today is to have a twinzer or quad fin setup (both 4 fin setups). Very good flotation for the length.

Postmodern Fish – Closer in shape to a shortboard with some characteristics of the traditional fish. Wider than the standard thruster shortboard and ridden about 6 inches shorter. They are also slightly thicker than standard shortboards. Most still have the thruster tri-fin setup. Very good small wave performance boards but without the floation and wave catching ability of the wider traditional fish.

Most shortboard riders would prefer a postmodern fish as a small wave surfboard. They will ride similar but give a little extra floation those smaller waves. Traditional fish are preferred for those looking for even more floation and a skatier feel. Tradional fish setup as quads can handle a wider variety of waves and can easily handle overhead surf. Neither type of fish are usually used for barreling waves.

The epoxy version of these surfboards has become quite common today. They have even more flotation than their polyester (traditional material) counterpart, as well as having added strength, but sometimes don’t have the same performance feel to them and tend to have less drive of the bottom turn.

All fish are designed to be ridden short and anything over 6.5ft tends to get into “funboard” territory which has a different feel all together.

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Josh Stevens

If you are trying to improve your swim technique or improve your efficiency in the water, you need to work on some swimming drills. Do some drills every time you workout, include technique drills as part of this.

If you can fine tune your technique for the freestyle you can make the stroke more effortless which would translate to better times. In addition improving technique would help you expend a little less energy.

You can never do to many drills to improve technique and you should do drills that targets the different aspects of the swim. Done repeatedly, drills will allow you to get good enough that you do not have to think about what you are doing, it becomes second nature.

Another important aspect of swimming if you are a competitive swimmer is dealing with distractions. If you are not able to focus on the job at hand you will lose some of your edge when you get in the pool. You need to train yourself to not be distracted by the noise and goings on around you, learn to concentrate on your mission which is to swim the best times you can.

A lot of how well you do in sports is related to your mental state. Being in control of your mental state will give you the chance to perform at your best. A little research online can help you find methods for doing drills and improving your mental state. It would be well worth your time to learn more about these two important areas of training and competition.

Get The Best Sailboats For Sale

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Ian Treibick

It’s always a wonderful occasion if you’re seeking sailboats for sale. You cannot predict what you’ll come across. Whether you want a Catalina, a Hunter, or a Bristol you will benefit from the hunt because looking at sailboats for sale reflects your most passionate pursuits.

You might just feel stymied by the whole job of looking for a boat. Mull over the many uses of a sailing vessel. Your entire circle of friends will join you in using it. Whether you want to go cruising, racing, or just sailing, you must have a boat. And where do you look for new or used sailboats for sale?

For many people, the cost sets limits. For others, price is no object. Probably your best resource is to get in touch with the convention hall of the metropolitan area closest to you and ask when a boat show is scheduled. You can visit the boat show to review all types of sailboats for sale and consider the features you want.

If you cannot carry the cost of the model you desire, just buy a vessel that will stay afloat and carries a sail!  Even if you’re not spending much of the green, it’s a good idea to have a professional look at it initially, but it doesn’t have to be the most expensive model available. Your primary purpose here is to acquire something that will provide you with the opportunity to learn so you can begin to practice your pastime. In two or three years, you can buy something more costly. And that’s when you will make the purchase that’s absolutely right for you.

Even if you have lots of cash to spend on this acquisition, you are better off seeking advice from experienced sailors rather than boat manufacturers. A vendor will try to put influence on you so that your purchase falls in line with what they have for sale. A sailor who is objective will help you in deciding why you have to have a given boat.

So think about your boat’s intended purpose. Will you go for day cruises?  Do you expect to set the boat in fresh water?  Decide how many passengers will usually travel with you. Evaluate your logistical considerations so that you work out how distant you will be from help. What types of repairs can you manage alone?

As you think about sailboats for sale, don’t forget how much storage space you will need. Do you want a single-hulled boat?  Lots of people prefer the more stable displacement hull over other types. Some people will want the option to sail an extra day if desired. You also must pay attention to your boat’s additional power options, including alternator output.

As you decide on sailboats for sale, chat with their owners about costs. How much is an Aramid mainsail?  What will you pay for tri-radial jibs?  Find out how much a towing apparatus, dock fees, and storage will set you back. Be aware of beforehand everything you will need to buy in order to be entirely outfitted. Only then can you feel confident and make the best choice.

Catalina Yachts – One Of The Popular Kinds Of Yachts In The World

Tuesday, 19. January 2010

Author: Ian Treibick

People in most parts of the world wait for the summer season. They become happy about their summer vacations as summer is the season to enjoy the outdoor activities which is most of the time boating.

Most of the people have the desire to own a yacht and head to the beach for an adventure ride. If you are one among those then Catalina Yachts are among the top yachts in the world and are looked upon highly at any Yacht club. These boats are recognized by their deluxe interiors, which have enough room for an entire family, while still featuring extremely high operation. Basically, these boats have all of the features of a larger boat, except they are created in a much smaller package, making them easier to handle and store.

The cockpit is unique because it is spacious enough for multiple human beings to sleep, so it can be enjoyed by a complete family. The decks are also more spacious than most other yachts of these dimensions, so they are much safer to stroll around on. Catalina Yachts can be enjoyed in a variety of different circumstances at sea, which means that they are versatile enough to withstand anything that the ocean can throw your way.

When you are at the Yacht Club, you will see a variety of Catalina Yachts there because these are some of the best boats in the world. Patrons at the Yacht club realize this and will surely show you the reverence that you deserve when you are seen with one of these great boats. This industry is frequently changing and new things are becoming popular, but Catalina Yachts are one of the things that should remain well-liked for quite some time to come at Yacht Clubs all over the country.

Yachts have forever been products that are out of reach for the majority of the people in the nation because they are linked with upper class society. While it is true that most luxury boats are comparable in cost to a luxury car or a small house, they are actually not as unattainable as many people believe. The truth of the situation is that nearly anyone can afford a yacht if he or she truly wants to, as it is a matter of setting priorities. Those who truly believe that they would love to purchase a yacht should definitely look into Catalina Yachts because their smaller sizes make many of them much more reasonably priced to purchase for the common person.
